Sassoon Docks

Sassoon Docks is Mumbai's oldest wet dock, built in 1875 by the merchant David Sassoon, and remains the city's most active wholesale fish market. At dawn each day, fishing boats unload enormous quantities of Bombay duck, pomfret, mackerel, tiger prawns, and crab to wholesale buyers in a scene of extraordinary energy and smell. The spectacle — boats laden with silver fish, auctioneer shouts, ice and blood on concrete — is one of Mumbai's most vivid experiences.

Photographers particularly prize the early morning light here; arrive before 6am for the most intense activity. The docks are in the old Colaba fishing village area and can be combined with a walk along the causeway. Note that the market is working and functional rather than a tourist attraction — give way to the workers and don't block the ice trucks.
