The General Post Office (GPO) of Mumbai is housed in an extraordinary Indo-Saracenic building designed by John Begg and completed in 1913, with a massive central dome inspired by the Buddhist Sanchi stupa. The interior is a cathedral-like space of arched colonnades and terrazzo floors, still operating as a working post office and stamp museum. Collectors prize the GPO for its philatelic counters where Indian stamps are sold.
The building stands opposite the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and together the two structures frame the most architecturally concentrated square in Mumbai. The post office's Heritage Gallery in the rear wing documents the history of the Indian postal service from the Mughal period. Open on weekdays; the philatelic bureau has the most varied hours.
