Juhu Beach is Mumbai's longest and most popular urban beach, a 6-kilometre stretch of sand facing the Arabian Sea. It has been a recreational space for Mumbaikars since the 1920s, when the first beach hotels and clubs opened here. Today it is famous as the most democratic of Mumbai's public spaces — everyone from Bollywood celebrities (many of whom live in Juhu's residential streets) to working-class families spending a Sunday comes to the beach.
The beach is particularly lively at dusk when the sand fills with walkers, kite flyers, and food vendors selling pani puri, bhel puri, and corn-on-the-cob. The sea can be rough and is not always clean enough for swimming. The stretch near the ISKCON temple sees devotees making their way to and from the waterfront. Sunset views over the Arabian Sea from here are often spectacular.
