Prithvi Theatre in Juhu is one of India's most beloved theatrical venues, a 200-seat intimate theatre founded in 1978 by the Kapoor acting dynasty to promote Hindi theatre. The small auditorium has an extraordinary atmosphere — productions range from classic Hindi drama to experimental new writing — and has launched the careers of some of India's leading theatre and film practitioners. The venue is resolutely non-commercial and maintains deliberately low ticket prices to democratise access.
The attached Prithvi Café is a Mumbai institution in its own right, a cosy café where the film and theatre crowd gathers before and after performances. The combination of a good show and dinner at the café is one of Mumbai's great cultural evenings. Check the monthly programme; the festival season from November to January offers the strongest line-up.
