Malabar Hill is home to several of Mumbai's most important Parsi (Zoroastrian) heritage sites, reflecting the community's historic dominance of the neighbourhood. The Doongerwadi (Towers of Silence) on the forested ridge are the most significant — sky burial grounds where Parsi bodies are exposed to vultures in accordance with Zoroastrian ritual. Though the towers are not accessible to non-Parsis, the forested grounds around them are a remarkable ecological preserve within the city.
The Parsi Panchayet, the Parsi General Hospital, and several characteristic Parsi colonies (agiaries) in the area give Malabar Hill a distinctly community character. The Parsi community has been deeply woven into Bombay's commercial, civic, and cultural fabric for three centuries — exploring Malabar Hill is a way of accessing this heritage.
