The Hanging Gardens (Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens) on the western ridge of Malabar Hill are one of Mumbai's most popular green spaces, a terraced park known for its distinctive topiary — hedges trimmed into the shapes of animals including a lion, an elephant, and various birds. The gardens were created in 1881 over the city's main water reservoir, which they still cap.
The park is particularly pleasant in the early morning and late afternoon. Children's play areas and benches make it suitable for all ages. The topiary is unique and frequently photographed. The adjacent Kamala Nehru Park offers the best views of Marine Drive's illuminated "Queen's Necklace" at night. Both parks are free and open from 5am to 10pm.
