Mochemad Beach

Mochemad beach, about three kilometres north of Vengurla town, is a quieter and less visited alternative to Sagareshwar. The beach is long, relatively narrow, and backed by coconut palms rather than the casuarina trees that line Sagareshwar. A small Muslim fishing community lives at its northern end, and the beach retains a working, lived-in character rather than the more polished tourist atmosphere that has arrived at some Konkan beaches.

The water here is clean and the current generally manageable outside the monsoon months. Early mornings are the best time — the fishermen are out and back before most visitors arrive, and the beach in the hour after sunrise has a particularly good quality of light. From here, you can walk back to Vengurla town along the coastal path in about 40 minutes.

A story
Mochemad beach takes its unusual name — a transliteration of "Mohammed" — from a local Muslim fishing community that has worked this stretch of coast for generations. The Konkan coast historically had Muslim fishing communities interspersed among Hindu settlements, a legacy of the Arab and later Portuguese maritime trade routes that shaped coastal Maharashtra. The fishing here is still done with traditional methods: hand-cast nets from small wooden boats.
