Vengurla Lighthouse

The Vengurla lighthouse stands on a headland above the fishing jetty, giving views north along the Konkan coast and south toward the Goa border. On a clear day you can see the Vengurla Rocks (the Burnt Islands) offshore and trace the curve of the coast toward Redi Point and beyond.

The lighthouse is managed by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships and is technically open to visitors during limited hours. The real draw is the walk up to it and the views from the headland — the approach takes you past the fishing jetty where the catch comes in each morning, and the promontory itself is one of the best vantage points in the area.

A story
The Vengurla lighthouse was built by the British in 1869, making it one of the older lighthouses on the Konkan coast. The original lighthouse was positioned to warn sailors about the Vengurla Rocks, a string of small islands offshore that were a serious navigational hazard for ships using this coast before GPS. Vessels still give the rocks a wide berth.
