Sagareshwar Beach

Sagareshwar is a wide, pale sand beach about three kilometres from Vengurla town, backed by casuarina trees and largely uncrowded even in season. The water is clean and the beach well-maintained by local community standards. At the northern end, a small Shiva temple sits directly on the sand above the waterline — one of those quiet coastal shrines that give Konkan beaches their particular character.

The beach is at its best in October and November, when the monsoon has cleared, the sea is still warm, and the rains have kept the vegetation green. Sunsets here are spectacular, with the light catching the Vengurla Rocks (the Burnt Islands) offshore. Early morning is the best time to walk — the fishing boats go out before dawn and return around 7 or 8 am.

A story
Sagareshwar beach takes its name from the small Shiva temple at its northern end — Sagareshwar meaning "Lord of the Ocean." The temple is said to be several hundred years old, and local fishermen still make offerings there before putting to sea. The beach is virtually unknown outside the state.
