Redi Ganesh Temple

The Ganesh temple at Redi, about 20 km south of Vengurla near the Goa border, is one of the most important temples on the southern Konkan coast. The idol is venerated as Redi Ganpati, and pilgrims come from across Goa and southern Maharashtra, particularly during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in August or September when it draws enormous crowds.

The temple sits within and beside the remains of Yashwantgad fort, a Portuguese-era fortification on a promontory overlooking the sea and the estuary of the Terekhol River. The combination of fort ruins, Ganesh temple, and coastal scenery makes Redi one of the most photogenic stops along this stretch of coast. The beach below the fort is clean and almost always empty.

A story
The Ganesh idol at Redi is said to have been found buried in an iron ore mine, and the temple was built around it. Iron ore deposits and the divine presence of Ganesh — the remover of obstacles — proved an irresistible combination for Konkan theology. The temple sits at the edge of a fort complex overlooking a bay, and the ruins of the Yashwantgad fort surround it.
