Moirang is one of the oldest settlements in Manipur, lying about 45 km south of Imphal on the shore of Loktak Lake. The town carries deep historical weight: during World War II it served as the headquarters of the Indian National Army, and it was here that Subhas Chandra Bose first raised the INA flag on Indian soil. The INA Memorial, with its statue of Bose and a small museum of wartime artefacts, is the main reason travellers stop here.
Beyond the war history, Moirang is known for the annual Lai Haraoba festival in May, one of Manipur's most important traditional celebrations, held at the Ibudhou Thangjing temple. Hundreds of people dance and sing together in honour of Thangjing, the local deity. The festival offers a rare window into Meitei culture that few visitors get to see.
The lake itself is the wider draw. Keibul Lamjao National Park — the world's only floating national park — is a short drive south, and the Loktak Folklore Museum on Thanga Island gives context to the lives lived on the floating phumdis. A half-day trip from Imphal will cover most of the highlights.
