Ukhrul's main draw is the landscape — cool hills, walking trails, and the chance to experience Tangkhul Naga culture without the crowds of better-known hill stations. The town itself is small; most of the interest lies in the surrounding hills.
The Shirui peak (2,835 metres) is the defining excursion from Ukhrul. It is the only place on earth where the Shirui lily (Lilium mackliniae) grows wild, blooming pink and white on the higher slopes between May and June. The Shirui Lily Festival, held annually in May, celebrates this flower with cultural performances, traditional food, and processions. The hike up takes around three to four hours from the trailhead.
The Kachouphung Lake (also called Khayang Lake) is a serene high-altitude lake about 12 km from town, popular for picnics and birdwatching. The surrounding forest holds a range of birds, including species specific to this part of the Indo-Myanmar range.
The town's main bazaar reflects the Tangkhul way of life — produce, handwoven textiles (the Tangkhul shawl is distinctive), and local food. The weekly market draws people from surrounding villages and is the best place to see traditional dress.
