Shillong is the gateway to Meghalaya, and most travellers spend a night or two here before pushing south to the living root bridges of Cherrapunji and the village of Mawlynnong (often advertised as Asia's cleanest village). Both are doable as long day trips from Shillong but reward an overnight.
Dawki, on the Bangladesh border, has the legendarily transparent Umngot river — at the right time of year, the boats appear to be floating on air. Mawsynram competes with Cherrapunji for wettest place on earth. Mawphlang Sacred Grove, a Khasi sacred forest, is closer in and a good half-day. North, Guwahati is around three hours by shared taxi or bus.
