When to Go

The best time to visit Bargarh is from October to February, when the weather in western Odisha is dry, the heat is manageable, and the countryside is green from the monsoon rains. The absolute peak is late November or December, when Dhanu Yatra takes place — the festival date shifts each year according to the Hindu calendar, so check in advance. Arriving a day or two before the festival begins and staying through to the final performance gives the fullest experience; accommodation in the town fills up quickly in that period and you should book early.

January and February are also excellent for Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary: the reservoir attracts large numbers of migratory waterbirds, the undergrowth has thinned and wildlife is easier to spot, and the weather is pleasantly cool. March and April remain comfortable for visiting Nrusimhanath temple and the Gandhamardhan hills, where the waterfalls are at their fullest.

Avoid May and June: the pre-monsoon heat in western Odisha is punishing, regularly reaching 43–45°C. The monsoon arrives in June and continues through September; roads to Nrusimhanath and parts of Debrigarh can become difficult, and the humidity makes travelling unrewarding. Weaving goes on year round and the village workshops are accessible in all seasons.
