A more modest cousin of the great Puri shrine, Rourkela's Jagannath Temple in Sector 5 is the centre of the city's religious life. It follows the Kalinga architectural style typical of Odisha, with a tall deul tower rising above the sanctum, and houses images of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra carved from neem wood.
The temple is busiest during the annual Rath Yatra in June or July, when wooden chariots carry the deities through the streets and crowds in the thousands turn out to pull them along. At other times it is quiet and easy to visit.
