Sundargarh district is one of the most tribal areas in Odisha, with sizeable populations of Oraon, Kisan, Munda, and Kharia people, and the Tribal Museum is the best place in Rourkela to understand that heritage. The collection covers everyday objects, agricultural tools, jewellery, musical instruments, masks, and ceremonial dress from the region's indigenous communities.
The museum is small and unfussy in the way good regional Indian museums often are, with handwritten labels and dedicated staff who will happily walk you through. Half an hour will do but it is a useful counterweight to the steel-and-cement image of the city.
