The Jang-e-Azadi (War of Independence) Memorial sits beside the Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway just outside Kartarpur, about 15 kilometres north of Jalandhar. It is a substantial Punjab-state-funded museum dedicated to the role of Punjabis in the Indian independence movement, from the 1857 mutiny through the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the Ghadar movement to Bhagat Singh's hanging in 1931. A 45-metre minar — modelled vaguely on the Qutub Minar — towers over the complex and is visible from the highway.
The exhibits are well presented, with dioramas, audio guides in English and Punjabi, and a 4D film about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Allow at least two hours. The complex is large enough that you need to ride the small internal shuttle between buildings; wear good walking shoes for the rest. Closed Mondays.
