Kapurthala, 20 kilometres west, was once a princely state with a Francophile maharaja — the Jagatjit Palace, modelled on Versailles, and the curious Moorish Mosque are the highlights. An easy half-day. Amritsar, 90 minutes by car or two hours by train, is most people's actual reason for being in this part of Punjab; the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and the Wagah border ceremony deserve at least a full day and overnight.
Closer to home, the Jang-e-Azadi Memorial at Kartarpur (15 km) and Pushpa Gujral Science City on the road to Kapurthala (25 km) both make easy half-day trips.
