Meera Temple

The Meera Temple within Chittorgarh Fort is dedicated to the poet-saint Mirabai, one of the most celebrated figures in the bhakti devotional movement. Mirabai lived at the fort in the sixteenth century and her legendary devotion to Krishna is commemorated here. The temple is built in the Indo-Aryan style with a carved shikhara, and a small shrine inside holds an image of Mirabai herself alongside a Krishna deity.

Adjacent to the Meera Temple is the Kumbha Shyama Temple, a larger and older structure built by Rana Kumbha. The two temples together form a ceremonially important complex within the fort. Pilgrims visit year-round and the atmosphere is devout but welcoming.

A story
Mirabai — the devotional poet-saint who composed hundreds of bhajans (devotional songs) to Krishna — lived at the Chittorgarh Fort in the early sixteenth century as the wife of Crown Prince Bhoj Raj. Her refusal to conform to royal court life, her open devotion to Krishna, and the legends of miraculous escapes from attempts on her life have made her one of the most beloved figures in Indian religious history. Her songs are still sung daily across Rajasthan and beyond.
