Udai Bilas Palace

Udai Bilas Palace sits on the eastern bank of Gaib Sagar Lake, its pale grey-blue stone reflected in the water. Built in stages from the mid-19th century onwards, it is a confident blend of Rajput symmetry and Victorian flourish — covered walkways, pavilions, a courtyard pool, and a marble lakeside terrace where the royal family still hosts visitors.

The palace operates as a heritage hotel run by the Dungarpur royal family, but the public rooms — the dining hall, the bar, the gardens — are open to non-guests for tea or a drink. A meal here is one of the more atmospheric experiences in southern Rajasthan, and the staff can arrange visits to the Juna Mahal and the family's vintage car collection.

A story
Maharawal Udai Singh II built the central wing of Udai Bilas in the 1860s, deliberately working pareva — a soft local bluestone — into Rajput, Mughal, and European motifs. The Ek Thambia Mahal, or one-pillared pavilion, is a single shaft of carved stone holding up an entire wing.
