Gurukul Kangri University Museum

Gurukul Kangri University was established at the turn of the 20th century to revive Sanskrit learning and Vedic tradition, and its museum houses an impressive collection of ancient manuscripts, archaeological finds, and art objects from across northern India. The museum is one of the more overlooked attractions of Haridwar — most visitors pass it by on their way to the ghats.

The collection includes Vedic manuscripts, coins, sculptures, and a natural history section with specimens from the Shivalik range. The campus itself, set on the banks of the Ganges a few kilometres from central Haridwar, has a contemplative quality. The university is still active and you may encounter students and scholars going about their studies.

A story
Gurukul Kangri was founded in 1902 by Swami Shraddhananda as an attempt to revive the ancient gurukul system of Vedic education, where students lived with their teacher and learned Sanskrit, philosophy, and traditional sciences. It was a deliberate act of cultural resistance during British rule — an insistence that India's intellectual tradition was worth preserving on its own terms.
