Har Ki Pauri is the holiest ghat in Haridwar, and one of the most photographed scenes in India. Broad stone steps descend to the river, lined with shrines and brass bells, and every evening a spectacular aarti ceremony takes place as dusk falls — priests in saffron robes swing lit oil lamps in rhythmic circles while bells ring, conches blow, and hundreds of tiny oil lamps float out on the current. The atmosphere is overwhelmingly beautiful.
The ghat draws pilgrims who come to bathe in the Ganges, collect sacred water in copper pots to carry home, and release floating lamps in memory of ancestors. During the day the ghat is busy with activity; at night it transforms entirely into a festival of fire and devotion. Arrive at least 30 minutes early for the evening ceremony to get a good vantage point on the steps.
