Battis Khamba

Weathered Mughal tower north of Ram Bagh, linked to Jahangir-era river gardens

Battis Khamba is a neglected but intriguing Mughal tower on the Yamuna side of Agra, north of Ram Bagh. It dates from the early 17th century and belonged to the garden world of Jahangir's Agra, when nobles and imperial women built riverside retreats, checkpoints, and pleasure grounds beyond the main fort.

The monument is not polished in the way the Taj Mahal or Itimad-ud-Daulah are polished, and that is precisely why it suits repeat visitors. Go for context rather than spectacle: the octagonal form, pillared upper level, and battered masonry help you imagine the less famous garden architecture that once lined the river.
