Agra is too spread out to walk between sights, and the traffic is intense. Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are the cheapest option for short hops — agree on a price before getting in, or insist on the meter, which is rarely used. The new Agra Metro, which opened in 2024, runs a single line connecting Sikandra (Akbar's Tomb) to the Taj East Gate via Agra Fort and Mankameshwar — slow but cheap and pleasantly air-conditioned.
A prepaid taxi from the Cantonment railway station is the easiest way to reach your hotel on arrival. For day trips to Fatehpur Sikri, hire a car-with-driver from your hotel — about 2,000 rupees for the round trip. Avoid driving yourself unless you are used to Indian roads.
Around the Taj, motor vehicles are not permitted within 500 metres for pollution reasons. Battery-operated shuttle buses run from the parking areas to the gates.
