Mehtab Bagh

Mehtab Bagh is a Mughal charbagh garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna from the Taj. Restored from the 1990s onward, it gives the best ground-level frontal view of the Taj across the river — particularly at sunset, when the marble glows pink and the crowds on the south bank are out of frame.

The garden is laid out on the classic four-quartered Mughal plan, with raised paths, water channels, and small pavilions. There is little shade — bring a hat in summer. The best time is the hour before sunset; ride a tuk-tuk over the Ambedkar bridge from the main city. ASI charges a small entrance fee.

A story
The garden directly opposite the Taj was, according to most historians, where Shah Jahan originally planned to build his own black-marble tomb, mirroring the white Taj on the other side of the river. He never managed it — Aurangzeb deposed and imprisoned him before construction could begin.
