Auto-rickshaws are the most practical way to get around Allahabad — they run on meters nominally, but negotiating a fare before you get in is standard practice. Cycle-rickshaws are common in the older parts of the city and are the appropriate mode for the narrow lanes near the ghats. App-based cabs (Ola, Uber) work reliably in the Civil Lines and newer areas. The city is too spread out to walk between major sites.
During pilgrimage festivals — especially the Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela — large sections of the city near the Sangam are closed to vehicles, and the only way to reach the ghats is on foot or by special shuttle. Plan for significantly longer transit times during festival periods.
