Allahabad — officially Prayagraj — divides neatly between its sacred geography and its colonial-era civic life. The Sangam ghats and the religious sites draw the vast majority of visitors, but the Civil Lines district, Anand Bhavan, and the city's parks and museums give the city a depth that a purely pilgrimage-town experience would miss. The university gives the city an intellectual liveliness and a density of bookshops and coffee houses that most Indian cities of similar size lack.
