Begum Hazrat Mahal Park

Begum Hazrat Mahal Park is a small but important green space in Hazratganj, named for the Nawabi queen who led the rebellion in Lucknow during 1857 after her husband Wajid Ali Shah was deposed and exiled to Calcutta. A statue of the Begum stands at the centre of the park; she is one of the few women honoured by a major public monument in the city.

The park functions as the central public space of colonial Lucknow — middle-class families come in the evenings, ice-cream vendors gather along the railings, and it forms a useful break from the shopping crowds on the surrounding streets. The annual Lucknow Mahotsav cultural festival is held here in late November and early December.
