When to Go

The Lucknow year is unkindly hot for half of it. October to March is the window for a comfortable visit: clear skies, warm days, cool nights, and the season for nihari, kulchas, and the city's heavier Awadhi cooking. December and January can be foggy in the early morning, but the days are reliably pleasant. This is also when the Lucknow Mahotsav cultural festival runs (late November to early December), with classical music and dance in Begum Hazrat Mahal Park.

April to June is brutal — daytime highs reach 45°C and the city slows to a near-halt by midday. July and September bring the monsoon — heavy rains, frequent power cuts, and dramatic riverside floods on the Gomti. Muharram, in the first month of the Islamic calendar, is the most charged time to visit the imambaras — black flags fly, taziya processions move through Hussainabad and Chowk, and the city's Shia community marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in ceremonies that have continued since the Nawabi era.
