Bibiyapur Kothi

Late-18th-century Awadhi country house on the Gomti, tied to Lucknow's nawabi court

Bibiyapur Kothi is one of Lucknow's quieter nawabi survivals, a country residence built for Asaf-ud-Daula on the right bank of the Gomti River. Its neoclassical lines and out-of-town setting show a different side of Awadh taste from the more theatrical imambaras and gateways in the old city.

The house is now associated with the cantonment area, so access and atmosphere can be less straightforward than at Lucknow's major monuments. It is still worth noting for travellers with a strong interest in the city's courtly architecture: Bibiyapur helps fill in the geography of nawabi leisure, diplomacy, and retreat beyond the familiar central sights.
