Digha Beach

Digha's beach is the reason the town exists — a wide, hard-packed strip of sand on the Bay of Bengal, gentle enough that the sea stays shallow for nearly a kilometre out. The flatness of the coastline means sunrise and sunset are both fully visible from the beach, which faces roughly south. Locals have a particular enthusiasm for this: the sunrise crowds at Digha are significant.

The beach is busiest on weekends and holidays when families from Kolkata arrive in force. Midweek the town quiets down and the beach has a more local character — fishermen working their boats, children swimming in the shallow zones, vendors selling roasted corn and plastic toys. The sand is darkish grey rather than tropical white, and the water is brownish from river sediment, but the sheer scale of the coast and the horizon make it genuinely impressive. At low tide you can drive on the beach; at high tide the wave action is more energetic and swimming is done carefully.
