Jagannath Temple, Digha

The Jagannath Dham temple in Digha is a large and ornate Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, built in the architectural style of the Puri original. It sits near the western end of the town, set back from the beach road, and is the main religious landmark in Digha. The temple complex is active and busy, particularly on weekends and during festivals when pilgrims from Kolkata and across West Bengal arrive in large numbers.

The temple is open to all visitors. The architecture is impressive on the outside — a tall, elaborately decorated shikhara tower rises above the surrounding resort town — and the inner sanctum is richly decorated. Come early in the morning for the opening prayers, when the crowds are smaller and the atmosphere is most charged.

A story
The temple was built as a replica of the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, just across the border. For Bengali pilgrims who cannot make the journey to Puri — one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism — the Digha temple offers a closer alternative. It was inaugurated in 2014 and has quickly become the focal point of the town's religious life.
