Durgapur has a more westernised social culture than most West Bengal cities outside Kolkata, in part because the steel plant and engineering industries brought a diverse, relatively affluent workforce. City Center and Bidhan Nagar are the main areas for cafes and casual dining. Several of the hotels (Peerless Inn, the newer business hotels) have bars. The young crowd gathers at City Center in the evenings for fast food, coffee, and the cinema.
