Durgapur is a sprawling planned city — the distances between areas are larger than they look on a map and walking between neighbourhoods is not practical. The station sits in the middle of the city with two exits: the main side for City Center and most of the new townships, and the Market side for Bidhan Nagar and the older ABL/FCI areas. Auto-rickshaws are available from both sides; taxis and shared minibuses mainly operate from the main exit.
Minibuses are the main form of public transport and run frequently across most of the city. Most routes pass through City Center. Fares are very low.
Auto-rickshaws are slightly cheaper than taxis and useful for shorter hops. The rates are usually negotiable or agreed in advance.
Taxis do not use meters — fixed rates by destination are displayed at taxi stands near the station. Car hire with a driver, available at stands around the city, is the most practical option for a day of sightseeing: rates are reasonable and you avoid navigating unfamiliar routes.
Durgapur has no airport. All intercity travel is by road or rail.
