Durgapur is primarily an industrial city — it was developed in the 1950s around the Durgapur Steel Plant and has a distinctly planned, functional character. Visitors rarely come specifically for tourism, but those passing through or staying for business will find a lively enough city.
City Center is the main commercial hub, with malls and restaurants where the city's young crowd gathers in the evenings. The older Benachity Bazaar nearby has better food and a more characterful atmosphere. Durgapur Club on Bengal Chemical Road retains some of its colonial-era club feel with a swimming pool and grounds, though access is member-focused.
Kumarmangalam Park is the city's main green space, popular in the mornings for walking and in the evenings for families. The Durgapur Barrage on the Damodar River offers a pleasant riverside setting and is a favourite spot for locals at weekends.
The national highway dhabas on the Grand Trunk Road on the outskirts serve excellent mutton roti — honest roadside food at low prices and worth stopping for if you're passing through by car.
