Kumarmangalam Park is Durgapur's main public park, a large green space in the Steel Township area with a lake, walking paths, and gardens. The park is at its best in the early morning when residents use it for exercise and the light is pleasant. The surrounding Steel Township is one of the better-preserved examples of post-independence planned industrial housing in India — the streets are wide, the trees mature, and the atmosphere is unlike the denser Indian city you might expect.
The park hosts informal events and gatherings on weekends and public holidays. The rose garden section, when in bloom, is genuinely attractive. The lake in the centre has some birdlife and makes for a peaceful walk.
