Mandarmani Beach

Long West Bengal beach resort known for hard-packed sand, red crabs, and weekend crowds from Kolkata.

Mandarmani (sometimes Mandarmoni) is a long, flat beach in East Midnapore district of West Bengal, around four hours by road from Kolkata and just up the coast from the better-known resort town of Digha. The headline feature is the beach itself: roughly 13 kilometres of hard-packed sand, broad enough to drive on at low tide, which makes it one of the longest motorable beaches in India.

The sand turns red at times with tiny crabs scuttling in waves — the name supposedly comes from the resemblance to fields of mandar flowers. It is a popular weekend escape for Kolkatans, lined with mid-range resorts and seafood shacks, and quieter on weekdays.
