Japanese Shipwreck

The Japanese Shipwreck near Banyuning is Amed's most atmospheric snorkel and dive site. The wreckage lies in shallow water close to the shore, broken and coral-covered rather than intact, with clouds of small fish moving through the metal ribs.

It is best visited early in the morning, before wind and traffic stir up the water. The shore entry can be rocky, so reef shoes help. Divers will get more detail from the site, but confident snorkellers can still see plenty from above.

A story
The wreck's exact wartime identity is debated locally, which is why it is usually called simply the Japanese Shipwreck. What matters for visitors is its unusual accessibility: the remains lie close enough to shore that snorkellers can see coral, fish, and twisted metal without a boat.
