Pura Lempuyang Luhur

Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of Bali's major temple complexes, set high above the east coast on Mount Lempuyang. Many visitors come only for the lower split gate view toward Mount Agung, but the complex rewards those who keep climbing: the air cools, the crowds thin, and the pilgrimage route becomes much more interesting.

Dress requirements are strict and should be taken seriously. Sarongs are required, shoulders should be covered, and visitors should follow local rules on behaviour and photography. From Amed the drive is roughly 30 to 45 minutes, making it an easy morning trip before the heat builds.

A story
The lower Lempuyang gate became famous as the "Gate of Heaven" in photographs framing Mount Agung between split stone doors. The full temple complex is older and more serious than the photo queue suggests: pilgrims climb hundreds of steps through several shrines toward the high temple on the slope.
