The Bogor Botanical Gardens are one of the finest tropical botanical gardens in the world and the defining attraction of the city. Covering 87 hectares in the centre of Bogor, the gardens hold over 15,000 species of trees and plants, with specimens collected from across the tropical world over two centuries.
The layout is partly formal — wide avenues lined with palms and flowering trees — and partly wild, with dense undergrowth and towering canopy trees that block the equatorial sun. Labels are in Latin and Indonesian, but the scale and variety are impressive even without botanical knowledge. The Presidential Palace stands within the grounds, its lawns grazed by a small herd of deer that have become a local symbol. The grounds can be seen from the fence; visiting the palace interior requires advance government permit.
The gardens connect directly to Bogor's colonial centre. Allow at least three hours; a full day is better for serious plant enthusiasts. Admission charged; open daily.
