Eating Out

Kotagede is a place to eat street and warung food, not for sit-down restaurants. The market stalls inside Pasar Kotagede serve the local specialities at breakfast time. Kipo, the tiny green sweet stuffed with grated coconut and palm sugar, is the most distinctive — sold in dozens, eaten in seconds. Yangko, a chewy ginger jelly cake, is another Kotagede invention now sold across central Java. For more substantial meals, try gudeg (sweet jackfruit stew) and ayam goreng (fried chicken with kremes crumb) at the small warungs along Jalan Mondorakan after dark.
