The crater of Bromo is reached from the caldera floor by a concrete staircase of 250 steps cut directly into the side of the volcano. The climb from the base takes 15–20 minutes. At the top, the crater rim is a narrow path with a rope railing on the outer edge and the active caldera below — belching white sulphur smoke, occasionally roaring, sometimes quiet. The smell is intense; bring a mask or cover your nose and mouth.
The crater view is vertiginous and genuinely impressive — a ragged opening into a steaming pit far below the rim. On good days, looking back from the crater gives the full view of the caldera, the sea of sand, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru in the distance. The staircase is accessible from the caldera floor by walking or hiring a horse from the saddle rental point at the sand's edge. Allow 1.5 hours from Cemoro Lawang for the round trip on foot.
