From Surabaya (northern approach via Probolinggo): Take a train or bus from Surabaya to Probolinggo (2 hours). From Probolinggo's Bayuangga terminal, shared minibuses run to Cemoro Lawang (1.5 hours, around 30,000 rupiah). This is the most popular and best-connected route. The Probolinggo approach gives the most road traffic and tour group pressure.
From Malang (southern approach): By car or rented motorbike via Tumpang (more direct). Private transfers can be arranged from Malang. The southern approach is less crowded and offers different scenery through the Tengger highlands. Tour operators in Malang run dedicated Bromo tours.
From Surabaya direct: Private tour vehicles and charter taxis run directly from Surabaya to Cemoro Lawang in about 3 hours. More expensive but convenient.
Most visitors combine Bromo with a stay in Malang or Surabaya. Day trips from Surabaya are possible but require very early departure.
