Getting There

The main access point is Banyuwangi, the regency capital on the eastern tip of Java. Banyuwangi has a domestic airport with connections to Jakarta and Surabaya. From Banyuwangi, the Paltuding basecamp is about 38 km by road — roughly 1.5 hours — through town, then ascending the plantation road to the plateau. Taxis and motorcycle taxis (ojeks) can make the journey; organised night tours from hotels in Banyuwangi typically include transport in the price.

Alternatively, many visitors approach from Bali, taking the 45-minute Ketapang-Gilimanuk ferry crossing and then driving or taking a bus to Banyuwangi (about 9 km from the ferry terminal). This is the easiest combination for travellers already on Bali. From Bondowoso or Situbondo to the west, the northern approach to the plateau is longer but passes through coffee country and joins the southern road before Paltuding. All four-season tours depart from either Banyuwangi or the Paltuding basecamp itself. Some visitors overnight at simple guesthouses near the basecamp to avoid the early morning drive.
