The strip of cafes along Jalan Overste Isdiman and the side streets around the Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed) campus is Purwokerto's most concentrated patch of cafe culture. A dozen or more independent coffee shops have opened here over the past several years, most following the Indonesian indie-cafe formula: exposed brick, overhead Edison bulbs, cold-brew coffee on the menu alongside es kopi susu (iced coffee with condensed milk), and playlists running to late in the evening.
The standard of coffee is decent by small-city Indonesian standards — most use Javanese arabica from the highlands around Wonosobo or Temanggung, and the baristas are generally trained. Prices are student-friendly, with a large iced coffee rarely exceeding 25,000 rupiah. The cafes are busiest in the evening from around 7pm, when students come to do coursework or meet friends; the atmosphere is relaxed and the WiFi is usually reliable. For a wider choice of places to sit, explore the back lanes behind the main strip.
