Purwokerto is a dry city by temperament — alcohol is sold in some hotels and minimarkets but there is no bar scene to speak of. What has developed, largely driven by the student population at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed), is a lively cafe culture around the university district and along Jalan Overste Isdiman. Kopi susu (coffee with condensed milk), cold-brew variants and the ubiquitous es teh (iced sweet tea) are the drinks of choice, and most of these cafes stay open late into the evening as informal social spaces for students and young professionals.
