Alun-Alun Sumedang

The central square of Sumedang follows the standard Javanese and Sundanese template: a broad grassed space flanked by the regent's office, the main mosque, and the old administrative buildings left over from the Dutch colonial period. The Masjid Agung Sumedang, the grand mosque that borders the square, was substantially renovated in the late twentieth century but retains the layered roof typical of West Javanese mosque architecture.

The square is most alive on weekend evenings when food carts set up around the perimeter and families come out to walk and eat. On weekday mornings it is quieter, a useful orientation point from which the museum and Gunung Kunci are both within walking distance. The space itself is nothing exceptional — every Javanese and Sundanese town of any size has one — but arriving here first gives you a sense of the town's layout before you start exploring.
