Depot Bu Rudy is Surabaya's most famous seafood warung and a city institution. It is known above all for its sambal — a ferociously hot fermented shrimp paste condiment that people buy by the jar to take home. The menu runs to dozens of preparations of fresh seafood, all cooked to order and served with steamed rice.
The place gets very busy at lunch, with a queue that extends onto the pavement. Service is brisk and the setting is basic — plastic chairs and fluorescent lights — but the food is exceptional. The sambal is available bottled to take away, and queues for it can be longer than the queue for a table. Find it on Jalan Dharmahusada.
