Pasar Pabean

Pasar Pabean is a large, busy market in the old city district, sprawling across several connected halls near the Kalimas River. It operates early in the morning — arrive by 7am to see it at full intensity, when the produce, spice, and dried goods sections are at their most active.

The market sells everything from fresh vegetables and live poultry to batik fabric, household goods, and dried seafood. The spice section is particularly photogenic: towers of red and yellow powders, dried chilli, tamarind, and galangal packed into sacks. The market is used by locals, not tourists, so bargaining is expected and prices are genuinely low.

A story
Pasar Pabean has operated near the Kalimas River since the colonial era, serving the trading community of the old city. The name "pabean" means customs house — the market grew up around the colonial customs post where goods from the harbour were taxed and cleared. The original customs building is gone, but the market it spawned has outlasted it by more than a century.
