Benteng Heritage Museum

The Benteng Heritage Museum occupies a restored historic townhouse in Pasar Lama, the oldest part of Tangerang. It is dedicated to the history of Tangerang's Peranakan community — the descendants of Chinese immigrants who settled here from the 17th century onward and developed a distinct blend of Chinese and Malay culture.

The collection spans antique furniture, ceremonial objects, old photographs, and everyday items that bring the community's domestic and commercial life into focus. Explanatory text is in Indonesian and English. The building itself, with its characteristic Chinese shophouse architecture along the Cisadane riverbank, is part of the attraction — the museum has been thoughtfully restored rather than rebuilt from scratch.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Admission is modest. The museum makes an excellent pairing with the nearby Boen Tek Bio temple; together they give a solid picture of Pasar Lama's layered history.

A story
The museum takes its name from Benteng — Dutch for "fortress" — a nickname Tangerang's Chinese community adopted for themselves, referring to the way they fortified their commercial positions along the Cisadane River. Indonesia has few museums focused specifically on the Peranakan experience, and this one, opened in 2011, was among the first to treat this history as something worth preserving in its own right.
